
Sharjah, the third largest emirate of the UAE, occupies a total area of 2,590 sq km. It stretches over 16 km of the Gulf coastline and for more than 80 km into the interior. It is the only emirate to have land on both, the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. Kalba, Khor Fakkan and Dibba al-Husn are three territories belonging to Sharjah situated on the east coast, bordering the Gulf of Oman. The total area of Sharjah is equivalent to 3.3% of the country's total area, excluding the islands. His Highness, Sheikh Dr. Sultan al-Qasimi, is the Member of the Supreme Council of the UAE and ruler of Sharjah.
The capital city of Sharjah contains the main administrative and commercial centers. The city features Sharjah International Airport and Port Khalid to have easy connectivity with the outside world. The massive land area of Sharjah is also lined with some important oases of the region. The most famous oasis is Dhaid, which has a fertile agricultural land where a wide range of vegetables and fruits are cultivated. Khor Fakkan provides Sharjah with a major east coast port. In 1998, Sharjah was named as the Cultural Capital of the Arab World by UNESCO for its commitment towards the preservation and development of its cultural entity.
