History and Culture

Sharjah has a historical significance of its own. The emirate is a perfect mix of commerce and culture, providing a home for business and tourism, while preserving its traditional heritage. In the year 1998 the city was designated by UNESCO as the cultural capital of the Arab world for its commitment to art, culture. Sharjah City, a bustling administrative and commercial centre with its own distinctive ambience, has some finely restored traditional buildings, together with a wide range of impressive museums. Sharjah is U.A.E's third largest Emirate, covering 2,600 sq. kms and has two distinct regions: A sandy plain extending to the Hajar mountains in the west and a mountainous region strewn with fertile valleys, starting from the Hajar mountains to the west and heading east to the coast of Gulf of Oman.
