A local company in the province of Basra finalized on Thursday the first stage of the Sahat Saad bridge at a cost of 12 billion Iraqi dinars, Basra's governor said.

"The opening of this service project will help ease traffic congestions in the large city whose population reached three million people," the governor told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

"One of the largest in the city, the project, to be completed next April, will have several roads in different directions," he added.

Eng. Hazem Taherm, the supervisor of the project, told Aswat al-Iraq from the Basra municipality that the first stage envisaged the construction of concrete pillars and a 300-km-long Basra-Baghdad branch road was inaugurated today (Dec. 17).

The oil-rich port city of Basra lies 590 km south of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.
