Sponsored by Abu Dhabi National Islamic Finance (Adnif), the capital city will host a 10-month long chess tournament, starting on Thursday and ending in December to coincide with the 39th National Day.
The 2010 Adnif Grand Prix Blitz Chess Tournament is organised by Abu Dhabi Chess and Culture Club (ADCC).
The final show will culminate in December with two international grandmasters taking part that organisers said could be big surprise for chess lovers.
Adnif General Manager Aref Al Khouri said this this is the first time they are sponsoring a sport event and they will continue to support such activities in the long term.
"This sponsorship reflects our strong relationship with Abu Dhabi Chess and Culture Club. It also confirms Adnif's understanding and appreciation of roles played by arts, sports and recreational activities to encourage and facilitate sustainable development and welfare," he said.
The grand prix will see a total 10 monthly events starting on the first Thursday of each month with top 10 players entering the finals along with two invited mega-masters.
The tournament will be played under FIDE rules adopting the Swiss system.
