His Excellency Raul Campos e Castro, the newly appointed Ambassador of Brazil to Antigua and Barbuda, presented his letters of credence to Her Excellency Dame Louise Lack-Tack, Governor General of Antigua and Barbuda. The Ambassador also paid a courtesy call on the Honourable Baldwin Spencer, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda.

During their meeting, the Prime Minister welcomed the new Ambassador and expressed that he looked forward to building on the strength of the relations set forth by the Ambassador’s predecessor, His Excellency Brian Michael Fraser Neele, who was the first Brazilian diplomat to head the Embassy of Brazil in St. John’s. The Prime Minister emphasised the importance of continuing the various bilateral and regional cooperation initiatives already ongoing between Brazil and the Caribbean region.

Specific to cooperation between Brazil and Antigua and Barbuda, Prime Minister Spencer referred to prospects of establishing a language facility in Antigua for the benefit of citizens wishing to progress in knowledge of the native languages within the Latin American region; and the establishment of strong tourism linkages across Brazil, Antigua and Barbuda, and Portugal. Prime Minister Spencer noted that these initiatives could prove to be the most rewarding for the two countries.

Ambassador Castro welcomed the ideas of the Prime Minister and was eager to engage in activities which would serve to improve relations and increase knowledge across Antigua and Barbuda and Brazil.

The Prime Minister assured Ambassador Castro of the cooperation of the Government of Antigua and Barbuda in the execution of his duties and the fulfillment of his mission and also wished him every success during his current tour of duty in Antigua and Barbuda.

Brazil’s relations with Antigua and Barbuda were formally established in February 1982. Relations between the two countries reached a new high with the opening of the Brazilian Embassy in St. John’s in 2009.
