There is an equivocal rapprochement between the government and the Opposition over the electoral reforms.

After their second meeting on Tuesday, both sides expressed their satisfaction.

MMM leader Paul Berenger went so far as to say that “the reforms are tangible.”

The meeting was held at Clarisse House, the PM’s residence in Vacoas.

The meeting was attended by Prime Minister Dr Navin Ramgoolam and the deputy prime minister Rashid Beebeejaun representing the government.

On the Opposition side, Berenger was accompanied by Alan Ganoo, MMM’s deputy leader. Also present was former Finance minister Rama Sithanen, who is to submit a report on the electoral reforms.

The meeting lasted for one-and-a-half hours, while the next session has been scheduled for January 31.

The Best Loser System (BSL) remains the bone of contention but Berenger is confident that an acceptable formula can be reached.

“I am for keeping the BLS. However, the MMM is ready to have a fresh look at computing the proportional representation,” he told The Independent.

When pressed on the outcome, he said that no conclusive decisions have been reached.

“However, many points have been ironed out since we last met on January 12,” he added.

Both parties are giving importance to what unites them because three quarters of the votes are needed in the National Assembly for such a constitutional exercise to go through.
