Venezuelan Isles
Economy Overview
The islands’ tourismboom began in 1983, largely
as a result of the fall in the value of the bolívarand the consequent
tendency of Venezuelans to spend their holidays at home.Margarita’s
status as a duty-free zone has also helped. Venezuelan shoppers goin
droves for clothing, electronic goods and other consumer items. Gold
andgems are good value, but many things are not. There has been
extensive buildingin Porlamar, with new shopping areas and Miami-style
hotels going up. A numberof beaches are also being developed.
All-inclusive resorts and timeshare areexpanding on the northeast
corner of the island and there is a glut of hotelrooms and apartments.
The island’s popularity means that various packages areon offer,
sometimes at good value, especially off-season. Local industries
arefishing and fibre work, such as hammocks and straw hats. Weaving,
pottery andsweets are being pushed as handicraft items for the
tourists. An exhibitioncentre has been opened at El Cercado, near Santa
Ana, on Calle Principal, nearthe church.
Government
A 'National Constitutional Assembly'
convened in July 1999 to rewrite the country's constitution. At the
present legislative powers are in the hands of an 'interim' congress
while the president holds executive powers. Under the old system,
legislative power was vested in the dual-chamber National Congress,
composed of a Senate and a 189-member Chamber of Deputies while the
president, who was also head of state, was directly elected for a
five-year term.
