Republic of Mauritius
Economy Overview
Sugar dominates Mauritius' agricultural economy: raw and processed sugar accounts for one-quarter of the island's export earnings. Tobacco and tea are the main cash crops. Mauritius' previous dependence on sugar has been sharply reduced as a result of a strategic decision taken by the government in the late 1970s to develop an industrial capability based on Export Processing Zones, under which goods are produced exclusively for export from raw materials imported on favourable terms. Clothing, textiles, consumer and industrial electronics are the main products from this sector. Mauritius' service economy is based on tourism and financial services: tourism has been a well-established industry for many years, while the growth of financial services arose, once again, from a government initiative. The latter was implemented in the late 1980s, and over the last decade or so has proved attractive to companies in search of discreet 'offshore' banking and finance facilities. The island's largest trading partners are France, the USA, Hong Kong, the UK and South Africa. Mauritius is a member of the Indian Ocean Commission, which promotes regional economic co-operation, and of the Southern African Development Community.
Government
Under constitutional amendments which came into effect in March 1992, Mauritius is now a republic. Legislative power rests with the unicameral 62-seat National Assembly, which is elected by universal suffrage for a 5-year term. (Eight additional members are also appointed from among the defeated candidates to ensure an ethnic balance in the Assembly.) The National Assembly elects the president of the republic who is head of state. The president appoints the prime minister from the Assembly and other ministers on the recommendation of the prime minister.
