Economy Overview
Chinese leadership in late 1978 began moving the economyfrom a slow, incompetent, Soviet-style centrally planned economy to a moremarket-oriented system. Under such system operates within a strict Communistcontrol, whereas the economic influence of non-state organizations andindividual citizens steadily increased. The government increased the authorityof local officials and plant managers permitting a variety of small scaleenterprises. Eventually the economy was opened to increased foreign trade andinvestment. The result has been a booming growth in the economy a quadruplingof GDP since 1978. Measured on purchasing power parity(PPP) basis, China stood as the second-largest economy in the worldafter the US in 2004, although in per capitaterms the country is still poor. Agriculture and industry have posted majorgains especially in coastal areas near Hong Kong and opposite Taiwan and in Shanghai, where foreign investment hashelped encourage output of both domestic and export goods
