Economy Overview
Oneof the wealthiest countries in the Caribbean, The Bahamas depend heavily ontheir main industry of tourism. Other industries produce rum, oil, pharmaceuticals and salt. Transhipment through Freeport, which enjoyssignificant tax concessions, is another valuable source of revenue. The Bahamasalso has a sizeable and growing offshore banking sector, although it has comeunder pressure as a result of competition from elsewhere and internationalefforts to tighten up on 'tax havens'. In June 2000, the Bahamas wereidentified by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD)as one of 35 countries whose financial laws were inadequate to preventlarge-scale tax evasion and money-laundering. It has until 2005 to reform itsregime or face sanctions. Most foodstuffs and virtually all other products mustbe imported, mainly from the USA, although oil is purchased primarily fromIndonesia and Saudi Arabia. Other than the USA, the UK and Puerto Rico are TheBahamas' major trading partners.
Government
Thebicameral Parliament, composed of a 16-member Senate and a 40-strong House ofAssembly directly elected for a five-year term, has legislative powers. TheBritish monarch has formal executive powers, vested in a Governor General, though in practice the Governor General almost invariably acts upon the adviceof a Cabinet of Ministers appointed from the House of Assembly.
