Anjouan island is a part of the Federal Islamic Republic of the Comoros has declared itself an offshore, tax-free zone as of 1999.This island is notable for its waterfalls and abundant vegetation. The main town of Mutsamudu is built in Swahili-Shirazi style, complete with 17th-century houses with carved doors, twisting alleyways, mosques and a citadel. The ancient capital of Domoni is also worth a visit. The best beaches are in the Bimbini area. There are perfume distilleries at Bambao.

Geographically, Anjouan is a part of the Comoro archipelago that is situated in the Indian ocean north of Madagascar.It is one of the four main islands of volcanic origin, surrounded by coral reefs namely Ngazidja (formerly Grande Comore), Nzwani (formerly Anjouan), Mwali (formerly Mohéli) and Mayotte. The latter is administered by France but is claimed by the Federal Islamic Republic of the Comoros. Land can only support subsistence agriculture but the surrounding seas are rich in marine life.

The island started to focus on development of its economy in the island. French and Arabic are the official languages of the island, but English is widely used for business. France Telecom in Reunion operates the local communication network and is connected using wireless technology.
