Tennis is considered to be the national pastime of Bermuda. There are many tennis courts on this small island. Sir Brownlow Gray built Bermuda’s first tennis court, in 1873 and made the game so popular in the island.
Most of the hotels have courts, and many are lit for night play. Rates are inexpensive and the courts are seldom full, and there are a variety of surfaces to play.
The ideal time to play is from October through March, when daytime temperatures rarely exceed 80° Fahrenheit. Racquet rentals are also available for around $6 per hour or per play, depending on the policy. Proper tennis attire is preferred on all courts. Tennis tournaments are played year-round, although most of the major ones are in the fall and winter.
The XL Capital Bermuda Open, a USTA-sanctioned event of the world’s top professionals, is played in April on clay courts at the Coral Beach & Tennis Club.
Heineken Open is played at the Government Tennis Stadium in April and is open to visitors.
Colonial Pomander Gate Open is a competition on hard courts for visitors and locals in June. The All Bermuda Tennis Club Members’ Tournament is a closed competition on clay courts held in September, to which visitors are welcome. All Bermuda Tennis Club Open in October is played at the Government Tennis Stadium and is open to visitors.
