Szeged is a real festival city in the heart of Europe. World famous for its paprika and salami (Pick Szalami), Szeged is also Hungary’s centre of learning and universities. Szeged lies on Hungary's south-central border and serves as commercial and cultural center for a region that includes parts of Romania and Yugoslavia. Majority of its inhabitants are students, who love to stroll along the riverside cafes and window-shop on the recently reconstructed elegant Karász utca, the town's main pedestrian-only street. |
The city is noted for its daring art-nouveau buildings designed by Ede Magyar, fine art, literature, museums and monuments. The centre of Szeged is marked by the 12th century medieval Tower of St Demetrius and the stately twin spires of the Votive Church. This cathedral was built to commemorate the revival of the city after the devastating flood of the river Tisza in 1879. The Tisza River splits the city in two, with the historic center lying, Pest-style, within a series of concentric ring boulevards on the left bank. The opera in Szeged is one of its main attractions. Theatres, cinemas, clubs, riversides, parks, swimming pools and sports grounds provide plenty of possibilities for recreation.

Dóm tér is a wide open square and home to the Szeged Summer Festival, a popular summer-long series of cultural events. Szeged also plays host to an international theater festival, Thealter, with a focus on alternative performances. It draws theater troupes from all over Europe and features fine art exhibitions, chamber music concerts, organ concerts and theatre performances. |
