Sporting in Anguilla

Anguilla is a perfect destination for sporting and leisure. Sporting is one of the most pleasant ways of enjoying the spectacular scenery of Anguilla. The sporting options are diverse, including horse riding, golf, biking, hiking, cricket and tennis.

1: Cricket

Cricket is very popular in Anguilla. There are often international or regional matches at the Webster Park in The Valley. Our many famous cricketers are renowned for playing the game the carefree West Indian way, with style and dash, to the accompaniment of steel bands, conch shells and dancing supporters.

2: Golf

To the delight of golf fans, the Anguilla government has reached an agreement providing for the construction of a $250-million golfing facility on the island, Anguilla's first, at the southwestern town of Rendezvous Bay West. The first phase of the project began in late October 2002 and, according to the Anguilla government, projected completion is slated for sometime in 2005. The deal reached between the Anguilla government and the course's project developers includes a world-class 18-hole championship course, spa, and extensive club house and player facilities. It is the hope of the Anguilla government that the new course will attract a new segment of vacationers to their island. Most of the golf courses have truly magnificent views of the Caribbean from elevated tees and promontory greens.

3: Tennis

There are tennis courts at most hotels and some have resident pros. Courts can usually be booked by guests from other resorts and lessons arranged if required. There are two public courts in The Valley and one at East End. Tennis enthusiasts will enjoy a perfect climate for the sport. If you prefer to exercise US-style, you will find facilities for American football, baseball and volleyball.

4: Boat Racing

Boat racing is Anguilla's national sport. It's the best time on land for a sport that takes place on the sea. Boats race from point to point with spectators viewing the course from cliff side vantage points to one of the village beaches for a big celebration party. The best racing starts in May and runs through Carnival week in August. The racing boats are all handcrafted on Anguilla.

5: Biking

Biking is an amazing sport and in Anguilla it is an excellent way to see the island. The flat terrain of Anguilla and the easily explored side roads along with one main road make biking and exploring much easier and exciting. Bikes are available at many hotels, and on the other hand they can also be rented. Mopeds are also available.

6: Hiking

Hiking is a great sport for people having a wander lust. Hiking is great way to get to known about the interior of the island. Through hiking one can also observe the sights and sounds of the island and can acquaint and familiarize one self with the culture of the island. Hikes to natural and historical points of interest are available; maps are available through the Anguilla Tourist Board and many of the properties. Escorted hikes are also quite reasonable and can easily be arranged.

7: Horse Riding

Horse riding in an exciting sport. Anguilla provides unlimited scenic and picturesque surroundings to enjoy a horse ride. Scenic horseback tours along cliff-top nature trails overlooking Katouche Bay, through the valleys in North Hill, ending up at Road Bay, with a dip in the sea is a very unique way to enjoy Anguilla off the usual track.
