Just off our island resort at Glover's Reef, Belize lays "The Wall" - the stunning coral-covered face of the continental shelf, where the sea floor drops away to 3000 feet in just a mile. Rated one of the top deep sea diving areas in the world, it rivals any location in the Caribbean. |
Charming scuba diving resort in Belize with beachfront villas on a private Caribbean island adds a touch of luxury to a resort dedicated to serious divers. As the only dive resort on Lighthouse Reef Atoll - world famous for it's Great Blue Hole- Lighthouse Reef Resort boasts the best diving in Belize, a private airstrip, the best beach in Belize, air conditioning, local cuisine and friendly people as well as 42 miles of pristine walls and reefs that will convince you that you have "dived and gone to heaven". While much of the flora and fauna is similar throughout the reef system, there are individual differences to be found everywhere. A particular type of fish may be seen on almost every dive, but during mating season it may congregate in only one or two areas in great numbers. Hard corals, gorgonians, sea fans, tunicates, and shellfish of amazing variety populate Belize coastal waters, but the predominance of one in a particular stretch of reef may give that area its name. Similarly, there are areas where grouper are known to shoal, others where large stingray are prolific or where the diver may encounter a whale shark. The manta ray and spotted eagle ray are fairly common, and the diver can reasonably expect to see one of these magnificent creatures during his visit. Hammerhead shark, Caribbean reef shark and even the oceanic white tip shark are seen occasionally, but these lucky sightings are rare. The Blue Hole
The "Blue Hole" is located in the center of Lighthouse Reef Atoll, which is about fifty miles due east of Belize City. Originally a cave, the roof fell in some 10,000 years ago, as the land receded into the sea. Almost a perfectly circular hole, it is 1,000 feet in diameter, and it is 412 feet deep.
Popularized by a Jacques Cousteau television special, this has become the most famous dive site in all Belize. If you are interested in diving this site, numerous dive operators can provide day and/or overnight dive trips from Ambergris Caye, Belize City or various other offshore Cayes and Atolls.Long Caye, Glover's ReefLong Caye Dive and Gift Shop, located just down the beach from Slick rock’s facility on Long Caye, is a PADI scuba center with tanks, compressor, and two dive boats. Guests often take time off from our activities to go scuba diving. In addition to dives for certified divers, they provide Discover Scuba/Resort courses that permit non-divers to train and continue to dive for the rest of the week. They also offer many advanced scuba courses. Long Caye Dive Shop is a certified member of the PADI International Resort Association and is a full-service PADI training facility. Certified divers MUST present their cards and attend a check-out session.
There is a minimum age limit of 12 for scuba diving unless already certified. Kids under this age may not dive, nor join divers on the boat or snorkel from the boat while divers are diving. Therefore, single parents may not go scuba diving unless they have another adult in their party that can supervise their kids while they dive. There is a Bubble maker course for kids 8-11 years of age, which has a 6-foot depth limit, and takes one-half day.
