Horse-riding in Hungary

In Hungary, horse riding is both a tradition and an activity that dates back to many centuries. In the ninth century AD, the first Hungarians, the Magyars, were horsemen who rode from the Steppes of Central Asia to settle in present-day Hungary. They brought with them horsemen skills such as never seen before in Europe, leading to Hungarians being regarded as the nation of horsemen.

English terms like “Hussar” and “coach” originated in Hungary. The Hussars, typical of the equestrian nomadic people of the Euro-Asian Steppes, possessed clever battle tactics. The Hungarians spread the Hussar fighting techniques, together with their decorative uniforms and saddling methods, throughout the world.

According to historians the “coach” (Hungarian: kocsi) originated from a small Hungarian village - Kocs - which made a livelihood from cart building. Hungarians also had a large influence in the development of horse harness equipment, the halter, the decorative reins and the use of the bridle.

In Hungary the equestrian tradition is best preserved on the Great Hungarian Plain, the Puszta, which is famous for spectacular Hungarian horse riding shows. Here you will find the authentic Hungarian cowboys, the csikos, known across Europe for their prowess on horseback. Many of them are masters of the "Puszta Five" a feat of equestrian skill that involves riding five horses simultaneously in a stand up position.

Hungary is the only European country, apart from Ireland, which places no restrictions on riders. There are many horse riding opportunities in Hungary, like horseback tours, 'hunting' rides, horse-racing, carriage tours, carriage driving, horse riding schools, health-riding as well as horse-shows recommended for spectators only. Travel agencies offer everything from riding lessons to cross-country riding.
