Hiking in Montserrat

This verdant island and its natural bounties can be explored through hiking or trekking along the many paths that meander in the richness of its valleys and slopes. The Montserrat Forest Rangers can help you organize a variety of exciting hikes to any of the several trails in the island. You can contact the Montserrat Tourist Board for details.

Great Alps Waterfall Trail

A five kilometers hike up Great Alps waterfall through an unmarked creek bed path is a wonderful experience.

The trail climbs along the river past cashew nut trees and eucalyptus, through fern-lined gullies for an hour, until you reach the 80 foot tall waterfall. Here you can enjoy a true natural shower and the natural beauty of Montserrat.

Trail To "The Cot"

This hike through the lush vegetation presents some breathtaking views of the surrounding villages. It introduces you to the heritage of Montserrat with a visit to the site of an old banana plantation nestled among the ruins of a family cottage, The Cot. The ruins of this former summer cottage of the influential Sturge family are located several hundred feet above sea level. Walking further ahead along this path brings to a height of about 1000m from where you can enjoy some awesome vistas of the coast.

Silver Hills Trail

The Silver Hills is situated at the northern tip of Montserrat and is among the oldest sites on the island of former volcanic activity. You will find a dry forest here at Silver Hills that has been altered by years of grazing and arable farming. The hike begins at Drummonds, winds its way through the dry forest and open fields over the Silver Hills and returns to Drummonds. You will enjoy breathtaking views of land, sea and coastline along the path. Several species of birds are found in the area including the Red-billed Tropicbird, the mangrove Cuckoo and the Pearly-eyed Thrasher. Pelican point on the eastern coast is the only breeding colony of Magnificent Frigate Birds on the island.
