Hiking in Cuba

Hiking in CubaBreathe in the freshness of the tropical air and enjoy the rich vegetation of Cuba along its treks & trails. Cuba is a friendly place to spend free time walking through its tropical vegetation, due to the healthy clear air of the island and the inexistence of neither dangerous nor poisonous animals.

In recent years, trekking has become a popular pastime for arriving tourists. There are various tourist areas where trekking and rock climbing is available in "Viñales Valley" and "Soroa". The "Soroa" Valley is located in the centre of Cuba and has the most beautiful waterfall in Cuba. You can take a walk through the natural fountain to the rivers shore for a fresh water dip in the crystalline waters.

The Viñales valley offers a truly unique panorama and one that will leave you astounded by the contrasts. It has abundant tobacco plantations and Indian caves. These natural caves are accessed by a short walk into the mountains base and through the remaining 400 m of stalagmite, coated walls.

The Zapata is the largest natural system humid soil region in Cuba and is located in the central-occidental area, and due to the abundant fauna, the area has provided true ecological values over years of study.

The western area of the island is the largest of such reserves, which is also abundant with rivers and forests. The Sierra Maestra Mountain range has a beautiful mountain base flowerbed and you can find both ancient ferns and orchids in these areas. Thus you can find waterfalls, swamps, & diverse fauna while trekking or hiking around these immensely beautiful regions of Cuba.

By choosing a qualified guide and planning your trip correctly hiking in these areas can be a truly memorable and rewarding experience.

Cuba HikingModerate Hiking and Touring
Each trip to Cuba is an exploratory adventure in a country where some amenities will not be up to US standards. Some days will entail hiking on jungle trails and in caves, possibly using a rope for protection - only on rare occasions for certain steep sections. Our leaders are climbing guides, safety is their first priority, and mountain climbing and caving experience or knowledge is not required. Participants should be able to hike a full day in a beautiful but undeveloped setting carrying a light daypack in warm to hot weather and consider the experience "fun and adventurous".

Some travel days are long, although we will never spend an entire day en route. The itinerary has been planned so that we only have two one-night stays. Many activities are at night and after dinner. All accommodations (except at Cayo Sabinal) include private rooms and baths with hot water. However, water and electricity are cut daily in Cuba, and so on occasion there may be a delay in hot water.
