Golf, Tennis & Horse Riding in Puerto Rico

With year-round warm weather and hundreds of miles of coastline along the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea, most outdoor activities take place in, on, or around the water. However there are many options available for land-based activities including tennis, golf and horse riding.

Golf

Puerto Rico is the golf capital of the Caribbean. There are currently 23 spectacular golf courses on the island and six more are underway. Most have been designed by golf luminaries such as Robert Trent Jones, his son Rees Jones, Greg Norman, George and Tom Fazio, Jack Nicklaus, Arthur Hills, and Puerto Rico’s own Chi Chi Rodríguez. The courses are feats of landscape architecture that impress golfers and share the island’s year-round summer weather, tempered by the cool, gentle breezes of the trade winds. The tropical sky and glimpses of sparkling white sand beaches backed by the blue Atlantic or the turquoise Caribbean provide a relaxing backdrop.

Tennis

Many local communities and country clubs have tennis courts, but they are usually open only to residents, members, and their guests. All major resorts have courts for guests and many are open to non-guests for an hourly fee. San Juan’s Central Park, located in the heart of the city has 17 courts open to the public. Early morning is late afternoon are busy times on the court. However evening is the best time as the weather cools off slightly.

Horse Riding

Horses have been bred on the island for generations and are a common sight in many towns. You can go horseback riding along a beautiful beach, follow a trail through a tropical rain forest, or amble through a coffee plantation high in the mountains. Several ranches rent horses by the hour and offer guided tours and classes for beginners. The area around Cerro de Punta near Jayuya, the highest mountain on the island, has a trail for more adventurous riders.
