Fishing in Cuba

Fishing in CubaFishing is a favoured sport in Cuba. Sport, shark, deep-sea and other types of fishing are available from almost all coastal points on the island. For around 25 USD you can be sea bound on a luxury fishing boat in search of some good angling avenues.

Both Varadero and Havana have excellent facilities for both the novice and more mature angler. Boats leave daily for excellent catches of sharks, snappers, bonefish, striped bass, and tuna.

Fish as large as 70-kg (150-lb) sailfish and tarpon, and 225-kg (500-lb) marlin, black marlin and wahoo to name but a few. At the end of May, Marina Hemingway hosts the International sport fishing competition.

The various coastlines that offer fishing opportunities are the Marina Hemingway in west Havana, Tarara in east Havana, and the Marina Chapelin in Varadero. There are fishing programs to Rancho Hatuey, Sancti Spíritus, Morón, Ciego de Ávila, Viramas, and Granma, which provide various facilities like accommodation, meals, fishing guide and motor boat, guide services in various languages, and  6 hours of fishing.

The fishing season is throughout the year barring a prohibition in June. There are no limitations to hook the fish but tourists are only allowed to catch the species that count for their own record. There are also fishing programs to Marina Hemingway & Marina Chapelin where the fishing area is 1- 5 miles off the coast and Currican is the only fishing technique used.

At Marina Chapelín ,  in Varadero dock, there is a capacity of 4 fishermen and 6 accompanying persons, with a fishing area of 1 - 5 miles off the coast. The type of ship used is fishing yachts over 31 feet long, with flying bridges and moving chairs.
