Diving & snorkeling in Dominica

The waters of Dominica have been a source of delight for divers and have attracted a lot of tourists to this island. Shores off this island have been considered as “undiscovered” and diving activities like wall dives, descending up to 1000 ft., drop-offs, and deep dives are extremely popular.


Snorkeling has also been a major marine adventure in the famous reefs, hot & freshwater springs under the sea, sponges, black coral, pinnacles, and wrecks of the deep blue sea.
The underwater creatures include yellow frogfish, golden seahorses, polka-dotted fish, flying gurnards, electric rays, reef squid, sea snakes, & sea urchins.

The famous dive sites of Dominica are “Champagne”, “The Pinnacles” at Scotts Head, Dangleben’s reef, L’Abym, Soufriere Pinnacle, Coral Gardens, Rodney’s Rock, and Douglas Bay Point.


Diving at Scotts Head and Soufriere Marine Reserve gives an unusual experience of exploring the Soufriere Crater, where a volcano cradles the entire bay. The North and West ends of the reserve are submerged, whereas to the east is the mainland.

The south end drops steeply to the crater’s center, which is the home for larger fish. Thermal underwater vents create thousands of bubbles which ascend to the surface at “Champagne”. Scuba divers can even experience diving at the “Marine Park” from “Champagne” in the northern boundary, thru Scotts Head, Soufriere Bay, to the “Lost Horizons” at the south. To the North, 2 miles off the shore, is the Dangleben’s Reef. It has lots of sea-life  and 5 individual spires stretching to 30 ft. L’Abym dive site is made of vertical walls rich with black coral & sponges.

The Canefield River in Canefield Tug Wreck is filled with sponges, gorgonians, tropical fish, & sea horses. Coral Gardens in the south is a stand of nearly 100 yellow tube sponges, whereas in the north, it is filled with sponges, corals, baitfish, frogfish and sea horses. Rina’s Hole is a site for shallow dives. Maggie’s Point in the Central west coast consists of azure vase sponges, supporting gold crinoids, & rich finger corals.

Rodney’s Rock is a treasure for numerous marine life.To the north of Pointe Ronde there are underwater springs and volcanoes, which emit bubbles to the surface. Toucari Caves in the Northern Reaches has amazing caverns & arches, and is ideal for viewing a variety of encrusted sponges, black corals, and several species of invertebrates. Douglas Point has a huge barrel sponges, purple tube sponges, and radiant corals.

Douglas Bay and Scotts Head near Soufriere Bay Marine Reserve, “Champagne”, & Rodney’s Rock are ideal locations for snorkeling. Standardized and safety equipments with comfortable boats are available on hire. Snorkeling Gear Rentals are available at US$16
