Diving off the coast of Niue

Niue sits on top of an undersea mountain with pristine clear water hundreds of meters deep just off the island’s coastline. There are no rivers or streams in Niue and the rainwater filters through the coral structure of the island, devoid of any silt run-off as it enters the ocean. Diving sites off Niue Island are located in the Pacific Ocean as there is no fringing reef or lagoon surrounding the sea.

Niue is one of the world’s largest uplifted coral landmass. As a result, visibility in Niue waters is usually 30 meters, although it can reach 50 meters on occasion. The diving sites are a mix of caverns and pristine hard coral reefs with a wide selection of tropical reef fish and marine life. Once under water, you will come across friendly sea snakes along with barracuda, turtles, reef sharks and painted crays.

There are some excellent dive sites located within 100 meters from shore. These sites feature canyons, pristine coral ridges, undersea caverns and traditional fishing grounds where divers can observe the rich aquatic life of the Pacific. Namoui is located below Coral Beach Motel and is accessible by inflatable raft, and is home to large sea turtles. In the opposite direction is Chimney, a where 5 meters below the surface you drop vertically 23 meters down a shaft then side exit through a large cavern to the open sea. The diving site off Avatele is also home to a beautiful swimming lagoon and fishing area, where locals cast off in their canoes. From Alofi swim out 100 meters and descend to a coral outcrop at 40 meters, where you can look over the edge of Niues undersea mountain called "The Abyss.”
