Villages of Liechtenstein

The principality of Liechtenstein is demarcated into 11 villages - Balzers, Eschen, Gamprin, Mauren, Planken, Ruggell, Schaan, Schellenberg, Triesen, Triesenberg, and Vaduz. There are no cities. Juxtaposed between Austria and Switzerland, Liechtenstein is one the lesser-known microstates, with most people mistaking it for Luxembourg.

Liechtenstein is one of the few countries in Europe that have relatively been untouched by the ravages of urbanity. Enjoy the green pastures, serene Rhine valleys, snow-clad mountains, lakes and the grandeur of the sombre castles that dot the countryside.

Balzers, with 4016 inhabitants, includes the Gutenberg Castle, Haus Gutenberg that is an educational institution. It also has the Mariahilf Chapel, and the St. Peter's Chapel with belfry along with the Parish Church that has an old church tower.

Triesen is another place of historical interest in this country supporting 4062 people. You can see an old part of village in the Oberdorf, St. Mamertus and Maria chapels, the shrine of St.Wolfgang, and an old factory building.

Planken has the holy Chapel of St. Joseph with copies of old masters. Eschen has the Holy Cross Chapel on the Rofenberg that was once a place of tribunal and public assembly, a renovated church in Eschen. Nearby are the exposed foundation walls of the previous churches.

St. Sebastian and Rochus chapel in Nendeln can also be seen here along with a monument built in the memory of the visit in the Principality of Liechtenstein of His Holiness the Pope on September 8, 1985. Some Roman excavations can be found behind Nendeln School.

Sites at Gamprin-Bendern include the Church Hill with Parish Church, an old Rectory and Mariengrotte which is a grotto built in 1896-1898 and is the only such place of prayer in the Principality of Liechtenstein. In Mauren, there is a Parish Church, while there the holy church of Holy Theresia of the Child Jesus cann be seen in Schaanwald.
