Traveling to Luxembourg

Currency
The euro € is the currency of Luxembourg. There are 100 euro cents to each euro. Eight euro coins are in circulation: .01€, .02€, .05€, .10€, .20€, .50€, 1€, and 2€. The seven euro banknotes are 5€, 10€, 20€, 50€, 100€, 200€, and 500€.

Please keep in mind that exchange rates fluctuate from time to time and may not be the same when you travel to Belgium, Holland, and Luxembourg.

It's a good idea to exchange at least some money, just enough to cover airport incidentals and transportation to your hotel, before you leave home so you can avoid the less-favorable rates you'll get at airport currency exchange desks. It's best to exchange currency or traveler's checks at a bank and not at currency exchange shop, hotel or shop.

Business Hours
Banks are open Monday through Friday from 8:30am to noon and 1.00pm to 4:30pm. Currency-exchange offices are open daily at the airport and the central station in Luxembourg City. Shops generally stay open Monday through Saturday from 10am to 6pm, and many also open on Sunday for shorter hours.

Drugs
Possession or use of drugs is illegal in Luxembourg, with severe penalties imposed on offenders.

Electricity
Electricity in Luxembourg is 220 volts AC, 50 cycles, but you should pack a European-style transformer, adapter and several different styles of plugs, since the outlet style and voltage strength can vary.

Emergencies
The emergency telephone numbers include 113 for the police and 112 for fire and ambulance.

Mail
The post office at Place de la Gare 1 in Luxembourg City is open daily for letters from 6.00am to 10.00pm but packages are not accepted for mailing after 5.00pm. At the airport post office, the working hours are from 7.00am to 8.00pm daily. Postage charges are .52€ for postcards or letters under 20g (.7 oz.) mailed to European addresses, .74€ outside Europe.

Pharmacies
Each one has a list of after-hours pharmacies posted on the door.

Police
For emergency police assistance, call telephone number 113.

Safety
Luxembourg might be the safest country in Europe, but as in any unfamiliar place, the usual warnings apply. Be aware of your immediate surroundings. Wear a money belt and keep a close eye on your possessions. Be particularly careful with cameras, purses and wallets.

Telephone
The entire country of Luxembourg is in the same local dialing area, so no area codes are used. To phone Luxembourg from within Europe, dial 00 (which gets you into the European long-distance network), 352 (the country code for Luxembourg) and then the five, six, seven, eight or even nine-digit local number. From North America, dial 011 (for AT&T international service or the access code for your long-distance company), 352 (the country code for Luxembourg) and then the local number.

Direct dialing to other European countries in addition to overseas (including North America) is available in most hotels.

Tipping
Restaurants and hotels will almost always include a 16% service charge and the 15% value-added tax (VAT) on the bill. Porters at Luxembourg's Central Station charge a fixed 1.50€ a bag.
