Grenville This second largest city of the island is located about halfway on Grenada's eastern shore. It is also home to Grenada's largest nutmeg processing factory. Visitors here can take a tour to view the entire process of nutmeg preparation. Saturday market in Grenville is quite colourful where local farmers, fishermen, and merchants gather to sell their products. Local handicrafts are also available in this market that is worth a visit. |
Sauteurs
On the northern coast of Grenada lies the town of Sauteurs. This town is of local historical significance. It takes its name from the French word for 'jump’ and is so known because this is the site where in 1651 Carib families leapt to their deaths than surrender to French soldiers. The Carib's Leap is a 130ft (40m) high coastal cliff where the tragic event took place. From here you can look down on the fishing boats along the village beach and see rock formations and nearby islands. This town is also the capital of St Patrick’s parish. In March, St Patrick’s Day is celebrated with a week of activities encompassing arts, crafts, food, drink, and a mini-street festival. Behind Sauteurs is McDonald College from where marvellous views of the sea, the Grenadines, the inland, and the cloud-covered mountains can be enjoyed. One of the island’s popular beaches, Levera Bay, can be approached from the west side of Sauteurs.
Gouyave
Along the western coast from St. George's lies a fishing port that is set at the entrance of mountain valleys. It is often referred to as ‘the town that never sleeps’. It is also the capital of St John’s parish. Tours and walks are arranged during the day, while in the evening there is food, drink, music and dancing. It is most famous as the nutmeg collecting point. At the Nutmeg Processing Station is a wooden building by the sea that emanates quite a very powerful smell. You can see all the stages of drying, grading, separating the nutmeg and mace and packing. The husks are used for fuel or mulch and the fruit is made into nutmeg jelly, syrup or liquor. The Fisherman’s Birthday celebrations are also held here in June. Festivities include church services, blessing fishermen’s boats and nets, boat races and late afternoon street festivals.
