The national capital of PNG

Port Moresby is the national capital housing a population of nearly 250 thousand. Set against a picturesque natural harbour on the southern coast, it is also the major port of entry for those traveling into Papua New Guinea.

Boroko is an important shopping centre here and includes several restaurants and bars, banks and department stores. Gordons is the venue for the lively and bustling Gordons Market that is one of the largest and busiest in the country.


The Parliament House is the government office with the new parliament building reflecting a traditional Maprik haus tambaran or spirit-house style.


National Museum & Art Gallery has a vast and impressive collection of displays that provide an insight into the country's geography, history, culture, flora and fauna.

The waters surrounding the capital are also ideal for several water sports. Idler's Beach is a popular swimming spot just east of Port Moresby. Other popular excursions from the capital are Sinasi Reef and Daugo Island. The beautiful reef and white sandy beaches are ideal for wading, swimming or simple seaside relaxation.

The culturally rich and diverse country has a variety of fascinating arts and crafts. Hanuacraft and PNG Arts are recommended if you intend to buy local arts and crafts.

The Central Province covers the narrow coastal strip along the southern coast from the Gulf of Papua to the eastern end of the mainland together with the southern half of the central mountain range. Located to the northeast of Port Moresby is the spectacular Rouna Falls and nearby is the Varirata National Park, the first national park of the country. You can explore the bounties of this park through the clearly marked walking trails here that have been provided with some excellent views of Port Moresby and the coast.

The National Botanical Garden in Port Moresby houses some of the rare species and protected orchids. There is also an impressive collection of various orchid provinces here.

The Kokoda Trail links the northern and southern coasts and is a very popular walking track that has an emotional historical significance associated with it. This was the site of fierce fighting between the Japanese and Allied forces in WWII.

 

North of Port Moresby flows the Brown River, a pleasant spot for swimming, rafting and picnics.
