The Venezuelan Isles

Venezuelan Isles is a collection of many interesting islands, isles and cays, most of which remain pristine & untouched. Walking around on these islands is the best way to explore them and is quite a rewarding experience. The largest, cleanest and most popular of the islands is Cayo Sombrero. It has some deserted beaches, with trees to sling a hammock.

La Tortuga is Venezuela’s second largest island, lying west of Margarita. It is a low, dry island with wonderful beaches, magnificent waters and good snorkelling. Los Palaquemos, an offshore reef with a few visible rocks, can be reached by a dinghy. Further, La Blanquilla and La Orchila are a military installation and landing here is prohibited. Both have coral reefs. La Blanquilla can be reached as a day trip from Margarita and has a secluded white sand beach with crystal clear water and excellent snorkelling. There are some rock formations and caves along the shore and you can also swim into underwater caverns while snorkelling.

Most yachts anchor at Playa Yaque. Americano Bay is just north of Playa Yaque and has white sand beaches, clear water, good snorkelling and also is a lovely spot to watch the sunset from the deck of a yacht. Isla de Aves surrounded by crystal clear water is 65 sq km of seabirds including sooty and brown noddy tern, frigate birds, and gulls. The island is also a nesting site of the endangered green turtle. Much closer to the mainland are two areas of reefs and islands which have been designated national parks.

Playuela is beautiful and ideal for snorkelling. Other islands include Playa del Sol, Bocaseca, and Cayo Borracho. Isla de la Plata is the most easily accessible island. It has a white sand beach and clear waters that are ideal for snorkelling. There are food and drink stalls, but drinking water is not available. A hat and sunscreen is also recommended as a protection against the harsh sun. It’s about 10 minutes by boat to the island.

Chimana islands has some beautiful beaches like the Grande, Sur, del Oeste and the waters surrounding these provide excellent opportunities for snorkelling and scuba diving. The islands are very popular and remain rather busy. Facilities include restaurants, snack-bars and thatched shelters that are available for hire.

Other islands in the vicinity are Monos that is good for scuba diving, La Borracha, El Borracho and Los Borrachitos, and Caracas de Oeste and Caracas del Este. All are in sheltered waters and are easy to explore by boat.
