Sightseeing in Saba

Saba has several great attractions for tourists to enjoy while on vacation at this tranquil little island. The island has built a reputation for its unspoiled natural habitats, which boast some of the most exotic and flourishing wildlife in the region. The island also is home to a number of shops and boutiques where you can find souvenirs and gifts to take back home for friends and relatives.

The main attraction on Saba is Mount Scenery, named for its scenic views of lush giant ferns, brilliantly colored wild orchids, and wild flowers that beautify the mountain's peaks. You can really get close and personal to nature by hiking up the 1,064 steps clear-cut into the windward side of the mountain and get shrouded in a swirling mist of clouds. The mountain and its forests are home to a myriad and vibrant wildlife, including rare species of birds like the bridled quail dove and the purple-throated humming bird, as well as various kinds of snakes, lizards, frogs and tropical animals.

The selection of beaches on Saba is limited because the coasts of island are made of rocky ledges and cliffs. The small strip of dark sand at Well's Beach is what can be called a beach on Saba. This is the place to explore the waters with a diving or snorkeling trip.

To learn more about Saba and its history, do not forget to visit the Harry L. Johnson Memorial Museum located in Windwardside. The museum is open Monday through Friday from 10.00 am to 12.00 pm and from 1.00 pm until 4.00 pm. The fee to enter the museum is a $2.

The museum was the home of a Saban seaman in the mid-19th century and is still furnished in the similar style. The museum exhibits the collections of historical island relics and family relics.

Shopping has always been a popular pursuit among visitors be it for souvenirs or specialties. Shops like the Artisan Foundation at The Bottom and Around the Bend in Windwardside carry items such as hand-screened fabrics and authentic Saba lace made on the island. The exotically flavored Saba spice liquor can also be purchased. Other places for shopping are located along the Main Road at places like Peggy's Boutique, Hillside Boutique, Paloma's, and several other shops. Despite the absence of beaches on Saba, there is never a time where one feels bored. The unexplored island of Saba offers plenty to please your eyes as well as mind on Saban vacation.
