Gavannagh Cave. Located near The Valley is the Governor's house. You can park in the field at the end of the road just past the house and walk a short distance ahead to see a clear path heading north. A ten minutes walk past some grey rocks brings you to the Gavannagh Cave. This cave had been a source of phosphate in the 19th century. The fossil remains of a large rodent like a large agouti or guinea pig were found in a phosphate shipment to the U.S.A. Further remains were discovered at Pitchapple Cave here and it was later confirmed that this extinct rodent about 3 feet (1 metre) tall and 350 pounds (160 kilos) heavy was exclusive to Anguilla and nearby St. Martin and St. Barthelemy.
