The royal structure at the northern end of Sandy's Parish is an extremely popular attraction and the main highlight of the country. In 1783, after Great Britain lost all its naval bases between Canada and the West Indies, Bermuda was considered for the Royal Navy's new base. Construction of this stone structure began in 1809 and was completed in 1849. The Keep, within the Royal Naval Dockyard is Bermuda's largest fort. It was later converted into the Bermuda Maritime Museum in 1974 and presently it is the largest museum on the island. Its extensive ramparts have been partially restored, and some periods of armament, from the 1820s to the early 1900s, are also represented there. In the lower Ordnance Yard, powder magazines house exhibits on Bermuda's maritime past including shipwrecks, Bermuda sloops, artifacts from the British and the American navies and a local "fitted dinghy." The imposing Commissioner's House, currently being restored to its 1820s glory, is located on the hill above.
