Rock Formations in Aruba

Mountains and huge boulders can also be found on this usually flat, arid island. These geological formations contain large quartzdiorite stone and provide adventure seekers with a site for exploration. They also serve as vantage points for a breathtaking view of the island from a high elevation. Extraordinary rock formations can be seen at Casibari and Ayó, where huge, diorite boulders weighing several tons have been carved into unusual shapes by the wind. At Casibari a rock formation rises up from the desert, just to the north of Hooiberg or “Haystack”.

The Government of Aruba has created walking trails and steps through the boulders, to facilitate hiking in this area so that you can climb to the top and enjoy a spectacular view of the island and the Haystack. There is also a snack bar and souvenir shop here.

Ayo Rock Formations
The gigantic stone formations here are believed to be the dwelling place of an ancient race of people.  Some markings and Indian inscriptions on the stone boulders can also be seen here. Ayó does not have steps so scaling these formations is a bit difficult. However, modern pathways have been constructed to allow the visitor to explore this ancient site. Toilets, a snack bar and souvenir shop are also planned.

Hooiberg
Near the village of Santa Cruz, just northwest, is the Haystack or Hooiberg.  The 541 ft high structure has steps all the way up to the top and presents a scenic view that is well worth the effort. . It is more familiar as the cartoon town of "Bedrock" after the animated TV show "The Flintstones." Its quite safe, even with children.

Lourdes Grotto
It is located at Seroe Pretoe (black hill) near San Nicolas. The Lourdes Grotto was created under the guidance of a priest named "Erkamp" and parishioners in the year 1958. The year assumes legendary significance, as it is believed that 150 years ago the Holy Virgin appeared in front of Bernadette. Bishop Holterman blessed the statue from the Holy Virgin and Bernadette. The statue weighed 700 kilos and eight people hoisted the statue and placed it in the grotto. Every year, on February 11th (feast of Lady of Lourdes) a procession leaves from the St. Theresita church in San Nicolas to the grotto, where a mass is performed.
