Malta is laden with monuments immersed in religious history. The religious architecture in Malta includes prehistoric temples, centuries old cathedrals, and megalithic monuments disclosing an open evidence of existence of various religions. Following are some of the most famous religious architecture exciting in Malta; |
1: The Cathedral
The 11th Century Siculo-Norman Cathedral was damaged by an earthquake in 1693 and rebuilt by Lorenzo Gafa.
It houses several paintings by Mattia Preti and other treasures such as the two chapels of the Blessed Sacrament, sculptures and the Baptistery. The Cathedral Museum is located in a baroque palace and includes various works of art.
2: Ggantija Prehistoric Temples
These primitive structures are older than the Pyramids in Egypt. Ggantija is a group of two very important temples dating back to around 3600 and 2400 BC.

3: Hagar Qim The original temple has undergone several alterations and the present structure is a novel construction, with carvings bearing a unique floral motif. Entirely built of the soft globigerina limestone, it contains the largest single stone used in any of the Maltese temples. Mnajdra Temple is a recently restored structure, near the temple of Hagar Qim. |

4: Megalithic Monuments
The remains of numerous temples erected in the Fourth and Third Millennium BC are impressive structures. Their unique beauty and aura reflected in their stone idols, animal representations carved in relief, stone tablets, altars and screens decorated with spirals and other patterns, fire places, ornamented niches and oracular chambers. Exploring these proves to be quite a delightful experience.
5: St. John's Co-Cathedral
This former Conventual Church of the Order, is historically and artistically one of the most important structures on the island. It was built between 1573 and 1577 to the design of Gerolamo Cassar, chief engineer of the Order. The "Beheading of St John", Caravaggio's masterpiece, is present in the Oratory. There is a museum here that houses a unique collection of Flemish tapestries, silver objects and church vestments.
