The Square is situated near the Pomme d'Or Hotel and is of national significance for the islanders. On 9 May 1945, an announcement for the liberation of the island from German occupation was made from here. Several nationals had gathered below the hotel's balcony to celebrate the arrival of the advance parties of troops from both the Royal Navy and the Army and the raising of the Union Flag. The sculpture here is a symbol of the Islanders who remained in Jersey during its occupation. It is surrounded by a moat that represents the sea and 12 fountains that represent each of the Jersey’s 12 parishes. A similar but smaller square was opened in 1990 to commemorate the Island's 45th anniversary of liberation. It was enhanced during 1990 - 95 for the 50th anniversary celebrations.
