Saumarez Park |
The house here and its grounds were originally the private residence of the de Saumarez family. Originally, the manor grounds reflected a Japanese culture with an old Japanese temple and a house in a garden with camellias, pines and bamboo. Most of the Japanese features of the estate are not seen today but the pagoda overlooking the pond and surrounded by willows still bears that oriental character. A collection of over 30 varieties of bamboo can be found here.
The States of Guernsey had purchased the entire property in 1938. The grounds and some buildings were opened as a public recreation area. Parts of the original estate still retain their original layout, such as the Rose Garden to the west of the house.
This site is still undergoing refurbishment and restoration work like restoring the walled garden with tropical houses and recreating some of the Japanese features, which were introduced in the late nineteenth-century. The house is now a residential home for the elderly, the Hostel of St. John.
