For those who want to experience the natural beauty of the island on foot, there are 25 miles of clearly defined footpaths running through the mountains and along the shore, revealing some truly spectacular panoramas.
For a view and a taste of history, visitors can climb Mount Concordia, which rises along the border in the center of the island. In 1648, the treaty that divided the island was signed here, and Mount Concordia continues to serve as a proud symbol of St. Maarten's 350-year history of peaceful co-existence between the two cultures.
Or, hike up beautiful Paradise Peak or Pic du Paradise, on the French side. This is the highest point on the island at 1400 feet. At the foot of the mountain is Loterie Farm, St Martin's only private nature reserve. You can sign up to take the Eco Challenge day hike through this former 150-acre sugar plantation, which contains the island's last remaining tropical forest. Biking
The main road which circles the island offers an excellent cycling tour. It's a vigorous workout with 35 miles /56 km, combining stunning views of the coastline with peaceful stretches in the unspoiled hillsides.
But mountain biking is best pursued along the trails surrounding Paradise Peak, the highest point on the island (1400 ft/420 m). The road around Simpson Bay Lagoon is just right for a more relaxed ride.
