Besides being a culturally rich country, Austria boasts the most awe-inspiring landscape of the world, blooming with nature’s most exquisite offerings. There are six National parks in Austria, almost 60 nature preserves and nature parks, about 35 hot spots for bird-watching, 20 Alpine gardens and many other opportunities to admire nature in its undisturbed, pristine beauty.
Here’s a list of some of the most absolute natural retreats in Austria;
The Donau Auen National Park
The Donau-Auen National Park is protecting one of the last large inbuilt floodplain areas (Au) in Europe. The river shaped this landscape with its floods and still nurtures a large diversity of plants and animals. The Danube flood plain National Park is a green ribbon between the conurbations of Vienna and Bratislava, and is home and refuge to many endangered plants and animals. The Donau-Auen National Park also offers versatile and diversified visitors’ program, offering Guided tours, Boat excursions, Bicycle tours, Coach ride and School projects.

The Gesaeuse National Park
With its mountainous landscape The Gesaeuse National Park is an area of breath-taking beauty. It is the most recent of the Austrian National Parks. With an area of about 11,000 hectares, The Gesaeuse National Park is the third largest national park of Austria. Its landscape is characterized by rock, woodland and water. Because of the great range of altitude differences in the Gesaeuse National Park, there is a dense concentration of extremely diverse habitats and, consequently, of species of animals and plants.

Nature Park Blockheide
The landscape of the park is dominated by powerful granite rocks, birch groves, pine trees and heather. Similar landscapes can only be found in Scandinavia. You can visit the park for free the whole year through. The natural monuments like the "Pilzstein", the "Teufelsbett" and many other stone formations are very impressive. Most exciting though are probably the well known "rocking stones" (Wackelsteine).
