National parks of Dominica

There are several national parks, including the Morne Trois Pitons (17,000 acres) in the south, the Central Forest Reserve and the Northern Forest Reserve, which together protect rainforest covering much of the island’s mountainous interior.

At the highest levels on the island is elfin woodland, characterized by dense vegetation and low-growing plants. Elfin woodland and high montane thicket give way to rainforest at altitudes between 1,000 and 2,500 ft, extending over about 60% of the island.

Morne Trois Pitons National Park
Much of the south part of the island (17,000 acres) has since 1975 been designated the Morne Trois Pitons National Park and in 1998 it became a World Heritage Site. Evidence of volcanic activity is manifested in hot springs, sulphur emissions and the occasional small eruption.

Its attractions include the Boiling Lake (92°C), which may be the largest of its kind in the world (the other contender is in New Zealand) and reached after a six-mile climb from Laudat. You have to return on the same path as an alternative trail is no longer maintained. An experienced guide is recommended as the trail can be treacherous, particularly if the mist descends, but it is easy to follow once you are on it.
