Museums in Sharjah

It is believed that to know about the past of the city, to make comparisons with the present and to learn about its evolution and the developments, the best place to be is the museums. Culturally rich Sharjah is home to not just one or two but almost 25 museums.


It is rare to find such a vast diversity in museums as one can find in Sharjah. There is the Archaeology Museum to study the historic developments of the emirate and Sharjah Islamic Museum to know more about the Islamic history of the region. While Philatelic Museum will inform you about the stamps and postal history, the Maritime Museum will enlighten about rich marine life of the area.

Sharjah Archaeology Museum

 

The Sharjah Archaeology Museum is situated near the Cultural Square in the Helwan District adjacent to the Sharjah Science Museum. “What is Archaeology” is the first place in the museum where you can get information about the concept of archaeology as a science and relevant excavations and operations. A well-located map tells about all the archaeological excavation sites in the emirate. A model of a completely excavates residential house finds a place in the centre of the hall. The exhibits are displayed according to their chronology in different halls, namely, The Live Past, The Stone Age, The Bronze Age, The Iron Age and the Advent of Islam. The new compound of the museum has a modern conference hall, well-stocked library, modern conservation laboratory, storehouse to preserve the original archaeological findings and an administration section.

Sharjah Natural History Museum and Desert Park

 

The Sharjah Natural History Museum and Desert Park is situated at Interchange 8 after the Sharjah International Airport. It is almost 26 km from the heart of the city. The museums offer a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the flora and fauna of the Arabian Desert. The museum and the park also features the Children’s Farm opened in May 1997, the Breeding Center for Endangered Arabian Animal opened in 1998 and the Arabian Wildlife Center opened in 1998. The exhibits are displayed according to their chronology in different halls, namely, Diorama Hall, Interaction Hall, Geology Hall, Flora Hall and Marine Hall.

Sharjah Science Museum

 

The Sharjah Science Museum is situated in the Helwan District adjacent to the Sharjah Archaeology Museum. Opened in 1996, it is the only interactive hands-on museum in the UAE. The museum features the Exhibition Hall and Learning Center. The demonstration tours enlightens about the Planetarium, Cryogenics, Static Electricity, Magic Show and Internet. The museum also organizes special camps and events for school children. The prime motive of the Sharjah Science museum is to motivate school kids to pursue science, technology and engineering a career.

Sharjah Islamic Museum

 

The Sharjah Islamic Museum is situated in a 200 years old house in Al Gharb, an old district in the city of Sharjah. The museum is housed in 2000 year old block owned by Saeed bin Mohammed Al Shamsi. Through the dedicated efforts of the government of Sharjah, Media and Education worked on renovating the house and furnishing it as a complete museum. The house displays unique and rare Islamic antiques such as scientific and religious manuscripts; collection of Islamic arts and crafts; clay, pottery and glass artifacts and metallic handicrafts inlaid with gold, silver and brass. There is a specialized library having books on history, science, Islamic arts and encyclopedias. The museum features the Shamsi House, Holy Kaaba Hall, Islamic Mints Hall, China and Pottery Hall, Arabesque Hall, Manuscripts Hall, Archaeology Hall, Science Hall and Metallic Handicrafts Hall.

Sharjah Heritage Museum

 

The Sharjah Heritage Museum is situated on the Al Ayubi Road on walking distance from the Sharjah Creek. It is not just one museum complex but also a combination of several museums, namely, Souq Al Arsah, Bait Al Naboodah, Al Midfaa House, Al Hisn Sharjah and Hisn Kalba. Souq Al Arsah is an old market place restored in traditional style located behind the waterfront in Old Sharjah. Bait Al Naboodah is a family house of Al Naboodah converted into a museum. Each room has a different theme exhibiting jewelry, costumes and artifacts. Al Midfaa House is also the family house of Al Midfaa family now converted into a museum located behind the souq. The Al Hisn Fort is the original residential place of the Sharjah’s ruling family. Sheikh Sultan Al Qassimi I constructed the fort almost 200 years ago.
