The Moselle Valley, just east of Luxembourg City, is one of Europe's most idyllic wine producing regions. The delightful scenery of the Moselle region flourished already under Roman rule when wine growing was introduced in the Valley. |
Today, in the vineyards along the Moselle between Schengen and Wasserbillig, an excellent wine matures, a wine that many connaisseurs rate as among the best vintages produced along this tributary of the Rhine. Many tiny picturesque wine-growing villages are scattered between the vineyards and the valleys. In spring and fall, the Moselle area is host to many grape and wine festivals with folklore parades. These are fun loving events with concerts and dancing, fully enjoyed by young and old.
The beautiful Moselle River, which marks southern Luxembourg's border with Germany, is known to locals as the 'Wine River'. The valley's Route du Vin, or Wine Road, begins at Wasserbillig and follows the Moselle River south through the wine region's capital at Grevenmacher and beyond to the picturesque villages of Wormeldange, Remich and Schengen (42 km). Each village celebrates nearly all stages of the wine-making process during the festival season from August through November.
Wine tasting is the obvious attraction of the Moselle Valley especially if you like sweet, fruity white wines. Guided tours and wine tasting in numerous wine cellars are a favorite past-time for visitors. Grevenmacher, Wormeldange, Remich and Remerschen are the ideal places to discover the wine cellars and the small wine museums. Magnificent villages, wine festivals and wine museums invite you to linger awhile in pure enjoyment. Excursions can also be taken by pleasure boat.
The Moselle was canalized in 1964 and links the Grand Duchy to larger European waterways.
