Martinique- The Isle of Flowers

The Arawak Indians named Martinique Madinina (Island of Flowers).  Renowned for its scenic beauty, the island is home to countless varieties of plants, trees and flowers, including nearly 100 species of orchids.

Exotic wild orchids, frangipani, anthurium, jade vines, bougainvillea, flamingo flowers, and hundreds of vivid varieties of hibiscus grow on the island. The island is embellished with hundreds of varieties of colourful flowers that enthrall the tourists.

Flowers are one of the main tourist attractions of the island and a darling of photographers and painters.

The anthurium, the floral emblem of Martinique, is exported throughout the world. The flower can often live up to three weeks.

Stops at some of the floral gardens of the Isle of Flowers can be very memorable experiences. In the north are MacIntosh Plantation with its incredible variety of anthuriums, and Les Ombrages, a botanical path that makes a fine introduction to tropical flora.

Near Trois Ilets is the Parc des Floralies, six acres of peaceful and pretty parkland with occasional horticultural exhibits.

In the suburbs north of Fort-de-France is one of the most beautiful spots on the island, the Jardin de Balata, a botanical garden in a rainforest setting. Discover the many paths that lace through the setting and enjoy the many species of tropical trees and flowers, including lots of ginger, heliconia, anthuriums and bromeliads.

Jean-Philippe Thoze nestled his showcase of more than a thousand species of plants, trees and flowers on the magnificent heights of the capital and at the foot of dramatic Pitons du Carbet.

The tropical forest of the North of Martinique consists of giant trees, like the white gommier, the yellow mangrove, the chestnut large sheets, the acomat din, the mahogani with large sheets and red wood carapate, which reach 30 to 40m.
