The Madang Province covers the fertile coastal strip rising to some of the most rugged mountains in Papua New Guinea. Off the coast from here lie some active volcanic islands.

The town of Madang occupies a central position along this coastal stretch and is lovely and charming town located on a peninsula extending into the sea. Madang is abundant with parks, ponds, waterways and offers splendid opportunities for snorkelling and diving. |
Wabag
Reaching the centrally located town of Wabag is quite adventurous and memorable. The road climbs almost 3000m (9840ft) and winds through some of most heavily-furrowed mountain ranges in country before bringing you to this town. The spectacular area is an inspiration for young artists here and their work is often displayed in the local gallery.
The charming lodgings available in the town are far from modern being built from local bush materials and surrounded by orchid-dotted gardens.
There is excellent accommodations available in the city and the food is also good. Kranket Island, across from Madang, has several villages and a beautiful lagoon, while Long Island, east of Madang, is renowned for its abundant bird life.
The Highlands
The countryside is quite spectacular with wide, fertile valleys, numerous rivers and craggy mountains. Handicrafts of the area are quite notable like the intricately decorated bows and arrows, kina shells, basketry and coarse woollen goods.
Mt Gahavisuka Provincial Park here has numerous walking trails that showcase the wide range of exotic flora blooming here and adding colour and charm to the ambiance. The area is an excellent picnic venue with picnic shelters. Mt Wilhelm, rising to a height of 4500m or 14,760ft is the highest mountain of the country and offers enchanting views of the area.
Lake Kutubu is a magnificent lake set against an idyllic backdrop of a picturesque countryside.
