Kingston- the capital city of Jamaica

Kingston is the capital of Jamaica. It is a lively town located on the southeastern coast of the island country at the foot of the Blue Mountains and overlooks the world’s seventh-largest natural harbour. It houses a population of nearly a million and has a cosmopolitan set-up.

This modern capital is the center of the country’s government and commerce while retaining a unique charm reflected in its historical and cultural attractions along with sophisticated nightlife and dining.

Founded in 1693 by the English after a disastrous earthquake destroyed much of the previous main port city of Port Royal (French for King's Port), the city became the seat of administration for Jamaica in 1872. It kept this status when the island was granted independence in 1962. On January 14, 1907, an earthquake in Kingston killed more than 1,000 people.

Apart from being the seat of the Jamaican government, the city is also home to the Mona campus of the University of the West Indies founded in 1948. Several annual and well-visited festivals are held in Kingston. The city also has several accommodations options to suit all types of travellers.

This town is bustling with a range of attractions that promise you a memorable experience. You can explore the charms of the city like the historic Devon House, the exciting performing arts at the Little Theatre and the National Gallery that houses a comprehensive collection of Jamaican art.

A city of museums, galleries and theatres, Kingston is also the birthplace of Jamaica’s own reggae music that has gained immense popularity all over the world. The metropolitan area is thriving with nightclubs, discos, dance and theatre companies and restaurants that assure an exciting nightlife. Kingston also has a spectacular arts and crafts market and offers excellent duty free shopping. The rich heritage is represented by the Kingston Parish Church, which has the oldest grave dating back to 1699, and the Parade, a lively and bustling square where British soldiers once drilled. Hope Gardens, located near the University of the West Indies campus is a 200-acre park that is blooming with vibrant flowers and trees all around the year. This park features an orchid house and small amusement park for children.

The town’s diversity includes a range of activities from golfing, horse riding, to enjoying the Philharmonic Symphony or watching the National Dance Theatre Company perform. You can also enjoy a picnic on the beach or stroll through the botanical garden.  This article was viewed 1797 time(s)
