St.Maarten makes a great jumping-off point for a daytrip to nearby islands that are different in ambience, resources and personality. Within 36 miles of St. Maarten you can find islands that are well worth investigating- Anguilla, Saba, St. Barths and St Eustacia aka Statia. All four contain beautiful places to explore, dine, stay and play .It's very easy to reach Anguilla, Saba, St. Barths and Statia.
Saba (also known as "the Unspoiled Queen") - is a lush, five-square-mile volcanic peak rising suddenly from the sea. Known for its charming villages, rainforest and dramatic topography, the island's four villages just barely humanize its steep slopes - Hell's Gate, Windward side, St. John's and The Bottom. Until recently, only flights of steps connected these hamlets; now there's a winding road that engineers argued could never be constructed. It took 20 years, but it was built.
Today, visitors divide their time between strolling past frilly gingerbread cottages on beautiful mountainsides and shopping for delicate Saban lace. In recent years, scuba diving in the reefs and underwater cliffs has come to be known as some of the best in the Caribbean. The island is only one hour away from Dutch St. Maarten by ferry and 15-minutes by air.
Anguilla - is a 20-minute ferryboat ride from Dutch St. Maarten and less than 10-minutes by air. The island boasts 33 beaches. Highlights include: Shoal Beach, known as one of the finest beaches in the Caribbean, and Rendezvous Bay, known for its two miles of sand dunes and a great place to see pelicans and other tropical birds.
St. Barth's - is 45-minutes away from Dutch St. Maarten by ferry. The island is known for its harbor town of Gustavia with French and Creole style buildings.
St Eustacia, a five mile long island with only 1600 inhabitants. This island is bypassed by most cruisers.
