Port-Louis, founded by Mahé de Labourdonais in 1735, is the capital and main harbour of Mauritius. The Place d'Armes is the focal point of the town and is surrounded by several French colonial style buildings like the Government House, dating back to the 18th century, and the Municipal theatre that was also built during the same period. Port Louis has two cathedrals, one protestant and the other is catholic.

The Supreme Court is also located here and you can also see some barracks of the 18th century and a history museum. The race tracks can be found near the town, at the foot of the mountains. The Fort Adelaide is a strong citadel built during the time of William IV and offers an amazing view of the race tracks. The waterfront is a lively place ideal for relaxation and offers shopping, eating and cinema theatres. To the south of Port Louis, Le Reduit, a colonial residence is surrounded by splendid gardens. It was built by the French for the Governors of that period. Beau Bassin, Rose Hill, Quatre Bornes and Vacoas are all located at a convenient proximity from Port Louis.

Domaine Les Pailles, ten minutes away from Port Louis, is a natural reserve extending over 1,500 hectares at the foot of a mountain range. The enchanting ambiance offered by nature and maintained by the several professionals, this area promises to be a rewarding experience. Domaine Les Pailles has a wide variety of restaurants offering a range of cuisine, a Casino, a pizzeria, a pool, a mini golf and the stables. You can also visit an area in the mountain that is home to some deer, monkeys and rare birds or the garden that has a mill, a prefect replica of the first sugar mills introducing visitors to sugar production techniques. Mahébourg

It is constructed on the splendid bay of Grand Port that was the centre stage for the naval battle between the French and the British in 1810, and Mahébourg still retains the secret charm of its past. The historic museum here tells the story of the battle of Grand Port. The old French house of the 18th century where the museum is located is the place where the British and French chiefs, wounded in the battle of Grand Port, were looked after. An artisan village built in 'Creole' architecture is located in the yard of the museum, offering a variety of handicrafts products.
