Ara Nui O Toi
The "great road of Toi" is the inland road that is referred to as the "backroad" encircling Rarotonga. Toi, is the warrior who constructed parts of this road in 1000AD.

Sacred Places (Marae)
Sacred places, locally known as marae, are situated at various points around the island. Marae is usually a formation of rocks in a circle or, semicircle surrounded by a wall of rocks. Many of the original marae's have been destroyed by the missionaries and the present maraes are the restored version. However, there are a few original ones left, such as the one at Highland Paradise in Arorangi. In ancient Cook Islands, marae's were used as burial grounds, for appointing chiefs and subchiefs and as meeting places for a tribe. Arai-Te-Tonga is also quite popular and frequented by visitors.
