The 40-acre Botanical Gardens in Roseau dating from 1890 are principally an arboretum; they have a collection of plant species, including an orchid house. Several Jacquot and Sisserou parrots can be seen in the bird sanctuary in the park, thanks in part to the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust. |
| The 'crushed bus' in the Botanical Gardens is a silent testimony to the force of the winds of Hurricane David (1979), and also the the regenerative power of nature (the tree is still growing, on top of the bus). Look out for the 'bamboo house', and nearby a small aviary with examples of Dominica's rare parrots. | ![]() |
High above the aviary is a fine vantage point, Morne Bruce, which can be reached from a track near the east gate, and provides a splendid view of Roseau.
D’Auchamps Gardens
D’Auchamps Gardens are about a mile out of Trafalgar Village on the way back to Roseau. The designer, Sara Honychurch, has laid out the family estate with a huge variety of wild and cultivated plants with a citrus orchard and a traditional Caribbean garden. More species are being added weekly and plants are well labelled. Emphasis is on the origin and uses of plants, whether medicinal or agricultural. Daily 0900-1600.
