Guadeloupe is an island rich with colorful and diverse floral life due presence of fertile volcanic soil, tropical rains and weather. However, the variety of the animal life found in Guadeloupe is limited. Still some very pretty and rare specimens can be witnessed in the island. |
Flora of Guadeloupe
There are woods of mangroves at the swampy coast, coconut and other tropical trees at the beaches, including the poisonous manchioneel tree. Typical rain forests cover the slopes of the volcano on Basse-Terre up to an altitude of 1000m. This is the site to look for kapok trees, huge rubber trees and hardwood trees like mahogany, chestnut and ferns in all sizes. Guadeloupe is home to some of the creepers, philodendra and more than hundred varieties of orchids. In higher altitudes crippled trees, wild pineapples, moss and lichen are part of the savanna.
Pineapples, bananas, oranges, lemons, limes, passion fruits and royal palm trees are part of the paradise garden here. Bougainvillea, Alamanda, Hibiscus, Torch Ginger, Anthurium, Birds of Paradise, Alpinia, and Lilies are some of the flowers that make the environment of Guadeloupe bright and lively.

The chirping of the colibris, sugarbirds with yellow bellies, humming birds, cow herons, blackbirds, the black woodpecker in the rain forest, moorhens in the Mangrove can be heard in Guadeloupe. One can also spot the wild ducks, sea pelicans, frigate birds, brown gannets and seagulls. |

Legions of colorful butterflies, crabs, a culinary specialty of Guadeloupe, as well as lizards and iguanas, are found on the Islands of Petite Terre and the Saintes. In addition, there are millions of frogs and toads, invisible during the day, but increasingly heard as soon as it gets dark.
The raccoon or Ti-Raccoon – the mascot of the National Park, is one of the most frequently spotted animals. The guimbo is a frugivorous bat. The mongoose, imported from the Indies to eradicate snakes, is omnipresent in the island.</
