Abaca Trekking Area - Lautoka

Thirty minutes from Fiji’s second city, Lautoka, Abaca is a trekkers paradise with a wide range of treks set in a landscape of black volcanic mountains, archaic cloud forest and yellow grasslands. Abaca or Ambatha is located in a small valley near the base of Mount Koroyanitu 16 kilometers from Lautoka and is the gateway to some of the most spectacular natural scenery in the islands. It is set in a tropical wilderness of primeval rainforests and plunging waterfalls against a backdrop of dusky lava mountains.

 

For the ambitious hiker, it is a challenging hour's trek from the village to the summit of Batilamu, where there is a panoramic view of the coastline of Viti Levu with the Yasawa Islands on the offshore horizon. Viti Levu's largest native rainforest in their unspoilt settings only 30 minutes from Lautoka.

 

A full day trek takes you through Fiji's only unlogged mountain forest to Mount Koroyanitu, Fiji's third highest peak. On a clear day, the spectacular view from Mount Koroyanitu includes much of Viti Levu and outer islands as far south as Beqa to Vanua Levu in the north.

 

Vidawa Forest Walk

This walk comprises of a full day adventure featuring a guided trip through the heart of the Bouma National Heritage Park. There is abundant birdlife, massive tropical trees and intriguing old hill forts and other archaeological remains on the way, and the walk finishes with a swim at the Bouma Waterfalls.

 

The price is around FJ$60 for adults and FJ$40 for children aged 12 - 17 years, which includes pick-up and drop-off at accommodation, knowledgeable Fijian forest guides, a big lunch, afternoon tea and entry fee to Bouma Falls. Information is available from the Bouma and Lavena Visitor Centres and from local accommodation on Taveuni.

 

Colo-I-Suva Forest Park & Nature Walks

Colo-I-Suva Forest Park was once a true tropical lowland rainforest, which has been interplanted with mahogany. It is in the upper drainage area of Waisila catchment, alongside Princes Road.

         

Lavena Coastal Walk

This is one of the most wild and beautiful coastal walks that starts from Lavena village and goes along Taveuni's south eastern coastline by taking the flat and well maintained track to the lower Wainabau Waterfalls. The Wainabau falls are situated within a beautiful environ and offers a short swim. Along the walk you will also find lovely beaches offering snorkeling, scenic views and great places to relax. Admission to this trail costs around FJ $5.00 per person without a guide payable at the Lavena Visitor Centre.
