Housing a population of over 23,000 and the most important trading centre in the Irish Sea, Douglas is the capital of Isle of Man. This traditional, yet thoroughly modern city is located about midway along the east coast of Isle of Man, along the spectacular semi-circular Douglas Bay. |
Being the capital city, Douglas is the seat of power. The Manx parliament, Tynwald Court, comprising the House of Keys and the Legislative Council, is located here along with the other departments of Government.
Douglas is also the most prominent seaport as it is the only port on the island that is not dependent on tides. The port handles all passenger traffic and majority of the country’s freight. Financial services have emerged as a key industry in this tiny island-country and consequently in its capital. The inimitable offshore banks, building societies, insurance firms and other financial institutions have made Douglas a prominent trading centre. The financial and commercial sectors of Douglas overlook the Circular & Finch Roads.
Another highly popular tourist-site in Douglas is the castle-like Tower of Refuge that can be seen on Conister Rock off the coast.The shores of Douglas boast an array of promenades, stretching along the entire length of the bay and are most suitable for pleasant and relaxing walks.
Entertainment shows are staged at the Royal Hall. The Manx National Heritage, near Gaiety Theatre in Douglas is an impressive museum that is well-worth a visit. The Central Promenade, beyond the Broadway, is lined with hotels and guesthouses dating back to the Victorian age. In the evenings, the promenade is outlined by decorative lighting which is made all the more attractive by the sparkling waters of Douglas Bay.
