Vanuatu experiences tropical climatic conditions in the north and sub-tropical in the south, i.e., hot and rainy. The tropical oceanic climate is moderated by steady southeastern trade winds through out the year, which becomes stronger between May and October. |
The rainy season in Vanuatu is from November to April. However, sudden tropical showers are not uncommon and can occur any time. The best season is from May to July, which is cooler and drier while the evenings can be brisk from June to September. During the wet season, winds from the north or west occur under the influence of hurricanes and tropical lows.
Vanuatu is the most prone to hurricanes of all the countries in the South Pacific. on an average, any given locality can expected to be hit by a hurricane every other year usually between January and April. The southernmost islands are less effected by the hurricanes and also get less rain than the hotter islands north of Efate.
The best time to visit Vanuatu is between May and October. During this season, the daytime temperatures ranges around 70s-80°s F or 21-32°C and nights around 60s-70°s F or 15-27°C. Southeast trade winds keep the climate nearly ideal. A sweater or light jacket is recommended for evenings year-round, especially if you go to the southern islands. Humidity averages about 74% and rainfall on Efate is about 230 cm (90 inches) a year.
